DOES YOUR EUPHONIUM SOUND GOOD?

I’m going to start talking about common problems that people encounter while learning specifically the trombone, euphonium, and tuba.

One of the most bewildering things about brass instruments is the roll our mouths play in their operation.

There have been countless debates, methods, books, papers, written, just to try and demystify what your mouth is doing while playing well.

The problem:

THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL SOLUTION.

Peoples mouths are all different. Stop trying to over complicate these things!

To sound good. Choose any comfortably sustained note on the instrument. Sing it with confidence! Match it on the instrument.

If it doesn’t sound good troubleshoot it. Change things one at a time until you figure out how to make your dream sound.

Troubleshooting tools:

  • Record and listen back
  • Breathe in a yawn style breath (AHH or OOO sound) before playing
  • Blow your air with an (AHH or OOO sound)
  • Are you filling out the instrument with your air?
  • Is your mouth too closed? What about too open (yes, this is possible)
  • Play music that you like. Maybe your favorite song.
  • Are you able to buzz on the mouthpiece! Try matching your buzz to your singing voice (very possible).
  • Stand or sit up straight.
  • Toy with how you hold your instrument.

DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!

  • Give up
  • Let yourself get angry. Take a break, this isn’t that serious.
  • Buy/ change mouthpieces, instruments, “tone enhancing” accessories.
  • Play for over 5 hours in a given day.

I hope this helps you on your journey!

Best,

AC
